Medical assistant programs prepare students to handle a variety of clinical and administrative procedures needed in physician offices.
The Medical Assistant Diploma offered by Anthem College – Fenton (St. Louis, MO) prepares students for entry-level positions as clinical medical assistants, administrative medical assistants, medical receptionists or bookkeepers, and laboratory assistants.
Students receive hands-on training in diagnostic and laboratory techniques. They learn how to give injections and perform venipuncture and urinalysis. They study medical terminologies, the respiratory and circulatory systems, and how to measure blood pressure, body temperatures, pulse and respiratory rates. They learn how to operate electrocardiology (ECG) machinery and read its graphs, and are trained in medical office emergency procedures.
In addition, students learn key administrative procedures including handling correspondence, scheduling appointments and communicating with patients. They are introduced to the concepts of medical insurance and billing processes and medical recordkeeping.
After they successfully complete all coursework, students enter an externship in a healthcare setting.
We are proud to say that our Medical Assistant Program Chair, Deb Westervelt, sits on the American Medical Technologists’ Board of Directors. She was recently awarded AMT’s Pillar Award, and received its highest honor, the RMA Medallion of Merit, in 2011. In 2010, she was named Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) of the Year, and her students have received RMA Student of the Year honors in 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2010.
A Medical Assistant Diploma graduate was named Student of the Year in 2011 by the Missouri Association of Private Career Colleges and Schools. Read about this student’s life-saving kidney donation to the spouse of a fellow student.
