Veterinary technicians are key members of any veterinary practice. They provide important support services, including laboratory and diagnostic testing, vaccine preparation, radiography, prepping animals for surgery and nursing.
There are relatively few veterinary technician programs in the U.S. One such vet tech program is offered by Anthem College—Phoenix, where students can earn an Associate of Science in Veterinary Technology.
Students in the veterinary technology program take a round of clinical courses. They are taught the basics of animal anatomy and physiology, as well as a nursing, disease management and laboratory skills. Other courses examine lab, avian, and exotic animals; animal nutrition; and parasitology.
General education courses build up professional skills and include communication, composition and psychology.
Students who graduate from the veterinary technician program are candidates for entry-level positions in veterinary practices and hospitals, humane societies, animal shelters and animal research facilities.
