Springfield is just outside of Philadelphia, a major healthcare center in the US. Philadelphia is home to dozens of hospitals, including Pennsylvania Hospital, the oldest in the United States. The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows modest growth in the city’s healthcare sector. BLS finds similar growth in the professional/business area as well, which includes computer-related services and graphic design.
Within the state, Pennsylvania has seen job increases from mid-2010 through mid-2011, with encouraging growth in both healthcare and the professional/business sector. According to the Philadelphia Business Journal, the region’s largest employer is in healthcare—the University of Pennsylvania Health System, followed by Jefferson Health System. Well-established businesses such as Merck, Lockheed Martin, and the Vanguard Group also make the top ten.
