Surgical Technologist Program

Surgical technologists are key members of surgery teams who provide pre- and post-operative services as well as assistance during actual surgery.

Comprehensive Surgical Tech Training

The Surgical Technologist program, also called Surgical Technology at some campuses, teaches students the fundamentals of anatomy and physiology they need to know for their careers. They are introduced to operating room environments and receive hands-on training in sterilization techniques and instrumentation set-up, and learn about surgical instruments and supplies. Students are also trained in basic surgical skills and laboratory procedures that support OR functions.

Students in the more advanced program take additional coursework that covers medical terminology, computer applications, and health law and ethics, as well as general education classes.

After successfully completing all required coursework, students are placed in unpaid Externships where they work under supervision with professional surgical teams.

Surgical tech graduates are eligible for entry-level positions in general and surgical hospitals, physician offices, and outpatient centers. Almost 70% of surgical techs work in hospitals, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

BLS expects the surgical tech field to grow by about 19% between 2010 and 2020. Job prospects will be better for techs who have had formal training and maintain professional certification. Much of the demand will come from an older baby boomer population who will need joint replacement surgeries and heart-related procedures, as well as other operations.
